About 31 miles northwest of Terceira, Graciosa Island, which occupies an area of 61 square kilometers and is the least humid of the Archipelago, owes its name to the delicacy of the landscape and its nickname to the place names Pedras Brancas, Serra Branca and Barro White.
With two curious tanks in whose waters are reflected the crowns of araucarias and the elms that constitute a pleasant set right in the center of the village, Santa Cruz is the seat of the unique county of the island, which is divided by three more parishes.
