Praia Formosa (Formosa Beach) is one of the most frequented beaches in the Azores archipelago. With a length of about 1 km, the beach is light in color (contrasting with most of the Azorean beaches) due to the presence of limestone particles.
Apart from the visitor enjoying clear waters and pleasant temperature, the surrounding area has several restaurants and is served by a campsite. In August, Praia Formosa hosts the Festival Maré de Agosto, a musical event that brings to Santa Maria not only international artists, but also a multitude of visitors. Praia Formosa has an average temperature of 22ºC in the summer and is endowed with surveillance and showers.
