Edmond Goeze (1838-1929), botânico alemão, escreveu que “o jardim do sr. José do Canto é inquestionavelmente o mais rico de todos, possuindo talvez mais de 3.000 espécies.

Nenhum dos jardins particulares, que tivemos ocasião de visitar na Europa, lhe pode ser equiparado. Deve porem melhorar muito ainda, como estamos convencidos, logo que o distincto proprietario voltar de Paris, onde se tem demorado.

Foi neste jardim que podémos estudar a vegetação dos paizes estrangeiros; foi d’elle tambem que trouxemos mais de 800 especies, e ainda que nos não pertença agradecer tanta generosidade, estamos certos que o leitor nos desculpará de fazer aqui com toda a publicidade.

Devemos agradecer tambem a Mr. Alexandre Reith, jardineiro em chefe, o muito que nos coadjuvou”.

Edmond Goeze (1838-1929), a german botanist, on behalf of the Botanical Garden of Coimbra University, conducted in 1866 a mission in São Miguel. Impressed with the “lovely gardens that exist in Ponta Delgada”, he wrote that “the garden of Mr. José do Canto is unquestionably the richest of all, probably having over 3,000 species. None of the private gardens that we had a chance to visit in Europe can compare.

However we are convinced that it will still improve a lot, as soon as its distinguished owner returns from Paris, where he has been staying at length.

It was in this garden that we were able to study the vegetation of foreign countries; and from it we also brought with us over 800 species, and although it is not our duty to thank for all the generosity, we are sure that the reader will forgive us for all this publicity. We must also thank Mr. Alexandre Reith, head gardener, for all the help he offered”
