SÃO MIGUEL – RIBEIRA GRANDE

Saindo de Ponta Delgada, pela estrada que liga as costas, sul e norte da ilha, numa extensão de 18 Km, tendo como pano de fundo a Serra de Água de Pau, encimada pelo Pico da Barrosa, o visitante chega à segunda cidade de São Miguel, a Ribeira Grande, nome que lhe advém da ribeira que a atravessa, vinda da Lagoa do Fogo.

Leaving Ponta Delgada in the direction of the city of Ribeira Grande you will traverse 18 Km and cross from the southern side of the island to the northern coast. Ribeira Grande received its name from the large river flowing from “Lagoa do Fogo” (Fire Lake) that crosses the city on its path to the Atlantic Ocean.

O concelho da Ribeira Grande a nascente é marcado pela sua ruralidade pacífica, dotada de belas paisagens e onde predomina a actividade pecuária, desde as freguesias da Lomba de S. Pedro até São Brás. A poente avulta a actividade piscatória e os seus recantos junto ao mar, numa identidade diferenciada entre a freguesia do Pico da Pedra, Rabo de Peixe e Calhetas.

Na cidade da Ribeira Grande pode apreciar-se a rica e interessante traça arquitectónica de algum do seu património edificado, dos quais se podem destacar os exemplos indicados nas páginas seguintes.

Ribeira Grande welcomes you to the municipality. The breathtaking landscapes are abundant on the eastern side of the municipality and the predominance of farming is notable. To the west, the towns along the ocean depend on fishing. You’ll notice great differences in the fishing communities between Pico da Pedra, Rabo de Peixe and Calhetas.

A walking tour through the city offers tourists the opportunity to observe the architecture of many of the older buildings including the examples pointed out in the next pages.
