Calheta is the seat of a municipality, subdivided into 5 parishes. The county is limited to the northwest by the municipality of Velas, being bathed by the Atlantic Ocean in all other directions. Its population nucleus as it grew was also radiating to nearby localities; was the case of Fajã Grande, Ribeira Seca, Relvinha, Biscoitos and Norte Pequeno. Its growth justified that in the year of 1534 was detached from the county of Velas.
