Leaving the Furnas valley towards the southeast, the town of “Povoação”, can be seen from the look-out point of “Lomba do Cavaleiro” with its’ seven plains fanning out like a star.
Povoação was the area first settled after the discovery of the island. Of special interest are the following:
- The oldest Chapel on the island, the “Santa Barbara” Chapel, constructed during the 15th century, along with the “Matriz Velha” Church, constructed on the ocean side next to the beach where the first settlers of São Miguel disembarked, are both important contributors to the architectural heritage of Povoação.

Overview |
The “Pico Longo” viewpoint, opposite to the “Lombo do Cavaleiro”, offers another panorama of “Povoação” and its’ seven plains.
- “Faial da Terra” and “Àgua Retorta” are two small, but interesting parishes found on the coast between Povoação and Nordeste. The landscape which surrounds these towns must be observed.
